George Engelmann was a German-American botanist. He was born on 2 February 1809 at Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and died on 4 February 1884 at St. Louis, Missouri, USA. He was instrumental in describing the flora of the then very poorly known west of North America, being particularly active in the Rocky Mountains and northern Mexico.
His legacy helped found the Missouri Botanical Garden.
He is comemmorated in the names of several plants, including Engelmann Spruce Picea engelmannii and Apache Pine Pinus engelmannii.
