Howard Baker Biography
Howard Henry Baker, Jr. (born November 15, 1925) is the United States ambassador to Japan. He was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2001.

Baker, a Republican from Tennessee, was formerly a US Senator. Baker served in the US Senate from 1967-85, with two terms as minority leader (1977-81) and two terms as majority leader (1981-85). He did not seek reelection in 1984. He served as Chief of Staff in the administration of President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989).

Baker also made a run for President of the United States in 1980 for the GOP nomination.

Since 1996 Baker has been married to former US Senator Nancy Landon Kassebaum.
